CSLF Public Finance Fellow | MA in Economics candidate
Along with several research associates from the Public Finance Research Cluster, I was able to attend the 2022 annual conference for the Association for Budgeting and Financial Management (ABFM), one of the principal organizations for public finance in the United States. This year’s conference was held in Miami, where more than 200 scholars, researchers, and graduate students gathered to discuss new research and approaches to today’s most pressing public finance challenges. The Public Finance Research Cluster serves as the secretariat for ABFM.
This conference convened new and seasoned researchers to present their work under various themes, including timely work on the fiscal impact of COVID-19, disaster assistance funding and fiscal crises. Other popular topics were housing finance, tax policy, pension and retirement funding, economic development, and behavioral public financial administration. Robert Buschman, ABFM secretary and Fiscal Research Center associate director, presented a paper on low-income housing credits, and Peter Bluestone, the associate director of the Center for State and Local Finance, presented new work on the impact of COVID-19 grants on childcare providers.
Additionally, the 2022 annual conference introduced a poster session that allowed graduate students to present their published research, working papers or research concepts to renowned academics. Similarly, the early scholar’s session created an avenue for graduate students to ask questions about research, work-life balance and the job market. While I found many of the sessions interesting, I am particularly grateful for ABFM’s emphasis on graduate student development and the opportunity to participate in a forum with renowned scholars.
