Georgia lawmakers kicked off the 2023 legislative session on Monday, January 9, 2023. With a budget surplus of approximately $6.6 billion, transportation and tax relief are taking center stage. Governor Kemp also announced raises for teachers and state employees as well as a $2.5 billion investment in solar panel production plants. A tax rebate plan to return some of the surplus money to Georgia taxpayers was also announced, and as in previous years, a key issue in the General Assembly is expected to be adjustments to state income taxes.
