ATLANTA — Georgia State University’s master’s program in economics is among the nation’s best, according to TFE Times. Rising one spot to No. 14, the program placed among the country’s top 10 percent of such programs, coinciding with the launch of its new online degree in spring 2024.
The ranking also places the STEM-designated Master of Arts (M.A.) in Economics program at Georgia State second in the Southeast, just five spots behind Duke. Associate Professor Pierre Nguimkeu in the Department of Economics at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies (AYSPS) serves as the program director, and AYSPS Assistant Professor Stefano Carattini is its online coordinator.
“The closer a program gets to the top of a rankings system, the more difficult it becomes to make improvements that impact those rankings,” Carattini said. “Gaining even one position over the previous year’s ranking feels more impressive when you think about the work that takes.”
TFE Times is an online news platform headquartered in San Francisco. Its rankings are scored on components that include GRE test scores, starting salaries and bonuses, undergraduate grade point averages, acceptance rates and the number of full-time graduates employed at graduation and three months after graduation.
“My understanding is that TFE Times is the main ranking for master’s programs,” Carattini said.
AYSPS takes a pioneering approach to economics that emphasizes public policy and empirical evaluation. Its master’s program leverages the strengths of an internationally renowned economics faculty and research centers including the Public Finance Research Group, Georgia Health Policy Center, Georgia Policy Labs and Experimental Economics Center. It has added the globally recognized STEM designation and highly popular analytics courses, and it continues to expand its new online program.
