The Center for State and Local Finance in the AYSPS Public Finance Research Cluster (PFRC) has released of a new policy brief, The Regional Impact of Generative AI in Georgia, authored by public finance fellow, Aidan Rickaby, and PFRC associate director, Peter Bluestone.
The brief explores how generative artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping Georgia’s labor market, with a focus on regional
disparities in job growth and automation risks. STEM and healthcare jobs are projected to see significant growth, with STEM jobs concentrated in Metro Atlanta and healthcare employment distributed more evenly across the state. While generative AI complements high-skill professions like STEM and healthcare, it may displace workers in customer service, sales, and office support roles, particularly in rural regions.
The findings underscore the need for targeted workforce development policies to prepare Georgia’s workers for the evolving economy. Programs like Georgia Quick Start and the Dual Enrollment Program could play a critical role in mitigating risks for vulnerable workers.
